BTEC First Diploma Care (including Early Years)

One Year Course

Course Content

This course is designed to give students, with no previous experience, an insight into the caring profession, whether this be caring for children, young people, adults or older people. The course covers the following subjects:

  • Care of Babies

  • Care Practice

  • Physical Care

  • Social, Emotional and Physical Development

Values and Communication Skills

Additional optional units are available and all students participate in a work placement scheme for one day a week. Their placement experience enables them to link knowledge gained on the course to practice in the workplace. The course is also timetabled in such a way that students, who wish to supplement their main qualification, can study for additional GCSEs.

Method of Assessment

Students are assessed continuously through the course and also on their work placement.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should normally possess 2 GCSEs (grade ‘D’ or above), an appropriate Foundation GNVQ, or equivalent qualification.  They will also need to provide satisfactory references.

Opportunities

There are many opportunities open to students completing the First Diploma in Care course. Some students may wish to use their qualification to progress onto other programmes available at the College, such as the National Diploma in Caring, the CACHE Diploma in Child Care and Education (NNEB) or the Pre-Nursing course. Others may prefer to use it to secure a job working in a day nursery or as a care assistant.
