Hospitality Awarding Body NVQ Levels 1, 2 & 3 Food Preparation/Cooking & Food Service

One Year per Level

Course Content

Students on this course practice food preparation/cooking and food service in the realistic working environment of the Collegešs Witham Room Restaurant, which is open to the general public. They are encouraged to organise special events and undertake work experience.

Students also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of visits organised as part of the course. These have included trips to the BBC Good Food Show, food suppliers such as Cadburys and a number of top London hotels.

Where applicable, students can work towards EMFEC Pastry Cooks 2 and 3 qualifications.

Method of Assessment

Students are assessed continuously through practical exercises in the Collegešs restaurant and production kitchen.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for entry onto the NVQ level 1 course but applicants will require a basic level of numeracy and communication skills. They will also need to provide satisfactory references. For level 2, applicants should already have achieved level 1, or equivalent. Applications from mature students are particularly welcomed.

Opportunities

The NVQ level 1 course is suitable for anybody who wishes to enter the industry at practitioner level, perhaps as a chef, waiter or waitress. Students who achieve the NVQ level 2 will also enter the industry at practitioner level but with a view to eventually reaching supervisory grade.
