STUDENTS BUILDING CROSS-COUNTRY REPUTATION

Grantham College students have been enhancing the College's growing reputation in cross-country running with significant successes in a number of recent events.

lan Boneham, a GNVQ Leisure and Tourism student at the College, has won both the Grantham and District Schools Championships held at RAF Cranwell on 5th December and the British Colleges East Midlands Championships at Mansfield on 6th December, despite the events being on consecutive days. Ian also represented the North of England at an international cross-country event held in Belgium last weekend, finishing 9th out of 70 runners. In Belgium too was Steve Ablitt, currently studying AVCE Leisure & Recreation at Grantham College, who finished 20th.

Other successes have included fellow students Matthew Freeman and Chris Pullen who study on the Pre-uniformed course, they were placed 3rd and 7th respectively in the RAF Cranwell event and along with Ian now go forward to represent the District in the County Championships on 20th January 2001.

Similarly the ladies team have enjoyed success. A level PE students Emily and Sarah Hoffman were placed 2nd and 5th at the Mansfield run and now qualify for the National British Colleges Championships, which will take place next year.

Course tutor John Rees said, " I was really pleased with the students performances and the commitment shown by the whole team, some of whom were competing in their first event. It will be particularly good to see three of our students running in the National Finals, it’s a great achievement considering the level of competition they were up against ".
